About Jurema (Mimosa Hostilis)
Jurema powder is grinded root bark of the Mimosa Hostilis, nowadays the scientific name is Mimosa Tenuiflora. This tree or bush from the family of the Fabaceae is originally from north eastern Brazil but also grows in several countries in Central and South America. This entheogen can be used as an ingredient in Ayahuasa but is also effective without the addition of other plant species. The effect is identical, the intensity and duration varies. The traditional preparation of Mimosa Hostilis is called Vinho de Jurema (Wine of Jurema). This 'sacred' beverage has been used by shamans since thousands of years, serving it during special ceremonies to invoke visions and experience the Divine. The first descriptions of these rituals date back to 1788. Jurema is used recreationally and also for religious, shamanic and spiritual ceremonies, due to its therapeutic effect. Mimosa Hostilis contains N, N-DMT, powerful psychedelics from the Tryptamine family.
Effects of Jurema (Mimosa Hostilis)
At first you might get nauseous. If you feel like vomiting it's best not to fight this urge and just give in to it. Vomiting has both a physical and spiritually purifying effect. Nausea can actually be a physical symptom of emotions, that you usually don't want to confront and are now being released. After giving in to the nausea you will feel a lot better and it will be much easier to enjoy the trip. After 45 to 60 minutes you can experience religious ecstasy and you may experience your first visions. Intense colours, flowers, fireworks and mandala shaped forms. With higher doses (not for the beginner) you can experience jungle like worlds inhabited by exotic animals (usually jaguars, reptiles and insects), ancestors, gods, aliens or monsters. You may be faced with fears and frustrations. It is important not to panic and to run away, but to learn to control them by surrendering to it. It is possible that you feel chills. Therefore it is useful to have a blanket nearby. Another common side effect is diarrhoea, which can be considered as part of the cleaning process. The trip usually takes about 3 hours.
There are several recipes for making Vinho Jurema. Each shaman has his own method of preparation, depending on the desired effect. Some shamans cooked the root bark up to 24 hours and added honey to mask the bitter taste. Dosages can vary according to the sensitivity of the user. Be aware of the effect of a given dose and combination. When using for the first time, you are advised to take a lower dose. It is important to use pure water (distilled or filtered) because an excess of minerals can hamper the effectiveness of the infusion.
