About the Strain
Golden Teacher is one of the most familiar names among Psilocybe cubensis varieties, yet its beginnings remain surprisingly difficult to trace. The strain is often linked to the 1980s, with Florida sometimes mentioned as its possible origin. However, no original collector or verified collection site has been documented, leaving its early history something of a mystery.
One of the more interesting chapters in its later history involves breeder Jik Fibs, who is credited with finding unusually pale mushrooms among Golden Teacher material. His selections eventually led to True Albino Teacher, a white variety with almost transparent spores. Ghost and Yeti are also reported descendants of that albino family, a striking contrast to the familiar golden-capped form.
Golden Teacher has also attracted scientific attention. In a 2023 genetic study, researchers identified a group of 37 closely related cultivated samples that they named the Golden Teacher group. This doesn't mean that all 37 samples descended from one original Golden Teacher culture, but it offers an interesting glimpse into the complex relationships between modern mushroom varieties.
