About the Strain
Mazatapec takes its name from the Mazatec people of Oaxaca, Mexico. The name Mazatec comes from a Nahuatl word meaning 'people of the deer'. The region has a remarkable history of mushroom knowledge, passed down through generations and later attracting the attention of researchers from around the world.
One of those researchers was French mycologist Roger Heim. In 1956, he published work on mushrooms collected by Valentina and R. Gordon Wasson during their earlier visits to the Mazatec region. Their collections helped document several wild mushroom species and brought wider scientific attention to the area's rich mycological traditions.
Although the name suggests a connection to this part of Mexico, the exact origins of today's commercial Mazatapec variety remain unclear. More recent genetic research has included mushroom samples under the Mazatapec name, but no documented link connects these samples or the modern commercial line to the historical collections from Oaxaca.
