“Malay” refers to the Malaysian origin of this green vein variety. The plant is known locally as ketum, a name also used in the Malaysian Herbal Monograph’s entry for Mitragyna speciosa.
The tree bears broad, oval to elliptical leaves with smooth edges and pointed tips. Prominent pairs of side veins branch out from the central midrib, giving the intact leaf a clearly defined vein pattern. Its small yellow flowers grow in rounded clusters.
