Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) belongs to the Aizoaceae family and is a succulent native to South Africa. It develops creeping or climbing branches and fleshy leaves, often growing among quartz patches beneath shrubs that provide partial shade.
The name Sceletium refers to the skeleton-like network of veins that remains visible as its leaves dry. The familiar botanical name Sceletium tortuosum is listed by Kew as a synonym of Mesembryanthemum tortuosum.
