Botanical Background
Mitragyna speciosa is a tropical tree in the Rubiaceae family. Its native range extends across parts of Southeast Asia to New Guinea, including Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo.
The leaves grow in opposite pairs along the branches, accompanied by small leaf-like structures called stipules at the base of the leaf stalks. The tree also produces rounded clusters of yellow flowers. Its fruits contain tiny, winged seeds that can be carried by wind or water.
